Ship Realms – The Ocean and Us

Since summer 2024, the German Maritime Museum (Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum) in Bremerhaven has been home to a new permanent exhibition. The exhibition explores technical, cultural, and ecological aspects of shipping and their impact on the world's oceans, making current research topics accessible and tangible for a broad audience.

A wide range of maritime objects and exhibits, combined with the interplay of spatial staging and media-supported interactive installations and exhibits, invite visitors to immerse themselves in the complex subject matter and current research topics.

Interactive Interpretive Media

Throughout all exhibition areas, various media-based interactive stations convey topics and contexts in greater depth – from simple touchscreens and large-format augmented screens to more complex structural media integrations.

Research Vessel

At the center of the exhibition, an abstracted research vessel extends across two floors. The large-scale installation invites visitors to explore current research topics as well as work and life on board through mainly media-based interactive experiences.

A multi-screen installation of LCD monitors and lightboxes documents four German research voyages. Playback is synchronized across all screens, allowing the installation to operate both as a fragmented collage and as a single narrative spanning the entire screen arrangement.

Set within the research vessel's laboratory section, three media-based interactive stations give visitors insight into the processes, tools, and methodologies of expedition research.

The cargo bay area takes a closer look at the logistics behind expedition planning and operations.

The "Logistics Control" station demonstrates how a ship is loaded with regard to weight distribution. Using tracking technology, abstracted container elements placed on a ship model are detected, and their weight and distribution across the ship's sections are displayed in a real-time, playful application.

A multi-projector projection mapping onto a supply pallet illustrates what equipment, quantities of food, and consumables are required for an expedition lasting several months.

At an interactive nautical chart table, visitors can playfully explore various expedition routes using a digital magnifying glass. The installation combines tangible object recognition with a real-time application.

SHIP BUILDING

The Shipbuilding thematic section traces the lifecycle of a ship, from planning and design through construction and launch to the final scrapping process.

A composition of original footage from historical ship launches is mapped onto the exhibition architecture at the end of the thematic section.
